PSI Licence
What does a PSI Licence cover?
A PSI Licence covers certain Crown copyright and Public Sector Information.
It covers Crown copyright that is likely to satisfy the following conditions:
- It is essential to the business of government;
- It explains government policy;
- It is the only source of the information;
- It sets out how the law, in both UK and EU, must be complied with;
- The citizen will consider the information to be key to their relationship with government;
- There may be a statutory requirement to produce or issue such information
It also covers Public Sector Information produced by public sector organisations that have authorised us to license its re-use through the Click-Use Licence.

Do I need a PSI Licence?
It all depends on what type of information you wish to re-use. To help you decide please read the guidance below.
If the material you wish to re-use falls under the categories listed below you DO NOT need a PSI Licence. For further information about how you can re-use this material please select the appropriate category from the list below.
- Acts of the UK Parliament, including Explanatory Notes
- Acts of the Scottish Parliament, including Explanatory Notes
- Acts of the Northern Ireland Assembly, including Explanatory Notes
- Court Forms
- Government Press Notices for England, Northern Ireland and Wales
- Measures of the General Synod of the Church of England
- National Curriculum for Wales
- Birth, Death, Marriage and Civil Partnership Certificates and Marriage Registers
- Scottish Administration Press Notices
- Scottish Statutory Instruments
- Statutory Instruments including those made by the National Assembly for Wales
- Statutory Rules of Northern Ireland
- UK Legislation
- Unpublished Public Records Open for Public Inspection
If the material you wish to re-use is produced by any of the departments listed below you DO NOT need a PSI Licence. To re-use this material you will need to contact the department concerned directly for permission. To view the department’s contact details please select the appropriate name from the list below.

If the material you wish to re-use falls into one or more of the categories listed below you DO NOT need a PSI Licence. This material is outside the scope of the PSI Licence. For further information about what you should do next please select the appropriate category from the list below.
- Computer Programs and Software
- Copyrights not owned by the Crown
- Departmental Logos
- Diagrams, technical drawings and other material which relate to wider intellectual property rights
- Material which is subject to Security Classification, Legal and Policy Restrictions
- Military Medals, Badges and Insignia
- Personal Information about Individuals
- Photographs and films held in photographic/film archives
- The Royal Arms
- Where there is a need for departmental clearance
- The material you wish to re-use may be classed as value added material.
If the material you wish to re-use is not produced by any of the organisations listed in the document below you DO NOT need a PSI Licence but will need to apply to the organisation that produced the material to obtain permission to re-use it.

If the material you wish to re-use is not featured in the above lists and is not value added material you DO need to apply for a PSI Licence - this is a free of charge service.
